The X Tarragona International Environmental Law Colloquium (TIEC) jointly organized by the Tarragona Centre for Environmental Law Studies (CEDAT-URV) and the Tarragona Environmental Law Students Association (AAEDAT) was held on 29 and 30 May 2025. This hybrid event was organized as an activity carried out by the Faculty of Legal Sciences (Department of Public Law) of theUniversitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain). This colloquium was carried out with the support of the Department of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia (AGAUR).
The theme of the X TIEC was “Shadows of Strife: The role of Environmental Law in Safeguarding People and the Environment in Times of Conflict“. In a world facing increasingly complex forms of conflict, the environmental consequences of such struggles are both extensive and pressing. From resource-driven tensions to socio-political upheavals, conflicts of various kinds pose severe and often overlooked threats to ecosystems and natural resources. The destruction of habitats, contamination of vital water and soil resources, deforestation, and the forced displacement of communities are just some examples of how conflict exacerbates environmental degradation.
This conference sought to explore this timely and urgent issue, shedding light on the vulnerabilities of our environment and those who protect it amidst diverse conflicts, while highlighting the critical need for its preservation. The X TIEC aimed to foster intellectual exchange and multidisciplinary dialogue on this topic.
David Whyte (Director of the Centre for Climate Crime and Climate Justice at Queen Mary University of London), Czarina Golda S. Musni (human rights lawyer and member of the Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao and the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers), and Mariana Walter (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals and Environmental Justice Atlas) addressed the overall theme of the colloquium in their outstanding keynote presentations at the 10th edition of the TIEC.
It is was great joy and immense honor that we celebrated the tenth edition of the Tarragona International Environmental Law Colloquium. Over the past decade, this event has become a cornerstone for fostering meaningful dialogue, advancing innovative research, and strengthening international collaboration in the field of environmental law. This milestone reflects not only the dedication of the TIEC Organizer Comittee, keynotes and attendees but also the growing global commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges through legal frameworks.
